What is blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the eyelids. This surgery can target either the upper lids, lower lids, or both, depending on the patient’s needs and goals. Whether performed for aesthetic reasons or to address functional issues, such as impaired vision due to sagging skin, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area around the eyes.

Eyelid surgery techniques address various concerns, including:

  • Loose or sagging skin (known as dermatochalasis) that creates folds or disrupts the natural contour of the upper eyelid, which may impair vision.
  • Fatty deposits that result in puffiness in the eyelids.
  • Bags under the eyes.
  • Drooping lower eyelids that expose the white area below the iris.
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid.

Who is a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery?

Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery typically include:

  • Healthy individuals without medical conditions that could hinder the healing process.
  • Non-smokers.
  • Individuals with realistic expectations and a positive outlook.
  • Those without serious eye conditions.

It’s important to note that the appearance of a drooping upper lid can sometimes be attributed to other factors, such as relaxation of the forehead skin or eyebrow. Eyelid ptosis, characterized by stretching of the upper eyelid muscle, requires a different surgical approach.

What should I expect during my consultation?

During the consultation for eyelid surgery, be prepared to discuss:

  • Your surgical goals and expectations.
  • Medical history, including any eye-related issues.
  • Current medications, including supplements and lifestyle habits.
  • Previous surgeries.

Your plastic surgeon will evaluate your overall health, take photographs, discuss surgery options, recommend a treatment plan, and explain potential outcomes and risks. Additionally, they will discuss the type of anaesthesia to be used. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or express any concerns during this consultation. It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions, whether excitement or preoperative stress, and your plastic surgeon is there to address them.

What questions should I ask my plastic surgeon about blepharoplasty surgery?

  • Are you vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a specialist plastic surgeon?

  • Are you a member of the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons?

  • Will the procedure be conducted in a hospital or office-based setting, and is the facility accredited for this type of surgery?

  • What type of anaesthesia is needed for this procedure?

  • Based on my medical history and condition, is surgery the best option for me? If so, am I a suitable candidate for this surgery?

  • Which surgical technique do you recommend for my case, and why?

  • What are the realistic expectations for the outcome of this procedure in my case?

  • What steps or lifestyle changes are necessary for me to get the best result from my surgery?

  • What is the anticipated duration of recovery, and what assistance will I need during this period?

  • What potential risks and complications are associated with this procedure? How would you manage these should they arise?

  • How will my results change over time?

  • If I’m unhappy with the outcome, what recourse options are available?
