March 19th, 2025 NZAPS is pleased to endorse the newly released Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Strategy developed by Melnet. Skin cancer is a significant public health issue for New Zealand. Eight out of every ten cancers diagnosed in New Zealand are skin cancer, and in 2018, 500 New Zealanders lost their lives to this largely preventable disease – more deaths than on our roads. The Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Strategy 2024 – 2028 seeks to address the significant impact of skin cancer on our nation. It has been developed by MelNet in partnership with skin cancer experts and stakeholders across many sectors, including the NZ Association of Plastic Surgeons. It aligns with broader Government health plans and draws on successful models like Australia’s SunSmart programme, which has demonstrated significant positive outcomes over 40 years. Meaningful change requires a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach, and we all have a role to play. It is only through our collective action that we can effectively address this significant public health challenge. Check out the Strategy and associated resources to understand both the human and economic impact of this preventable disease, and the opportunities we have to create meaningful change.
