What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also referred to as lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate excess fat from specific areas of the body. This technique is commonly employed to contour regions such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and other areas where traditional methods like diet and exercise may not yield desired results. Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery option that aims to help individuals achieve a more streamlined and proportionate physique.

Various liposuction techniques can target localized fat deposits in areas including:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Back
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest area
  • Face, cheeks, chin, and neck
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Inner knee
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms

Liposuction can be performed independently or in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures such as facelifts, breast reductions, or tummy tucks.

It’s important to note that liposuction is not a remedy for obesity nor a substitute for proper diet and exercise. It is most effective for individuals of normal weight who have excess fat deposits. Results may vary based on skin elasticity, with firmer skin yielding better outcomes compared to soft and thin skin affected by factors like stretch marks, weight loss, or aging. Individuals with less elastic skin may require additional surgeries to address and tighten excess skin. Additionally, liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite.

Who is a suitable candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is a highly personalized procedure, and individuals should pursue it for their own reasons rather than external pressures or ideals. Suitable candidates for liposuction typically include:

  • Adults within 30% of their ideal weight with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone.
  • Healthy individuals without life-threatening illnesses or medical conditions that could impede healing.
  • Non-smokers and non-vapers.
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals for body contouring in mind.

What should I expect during my consultation?

The success and safety of your liposuction procedure hinge greatly on your openness during the consultation. You’ll be queried about your health, preferences, and lifestyle. During the consultation, you should be prepared to discuss:

  • Your surgical objectives.
  • Medical history, including any conditions, allergies, and treatments.
  • Current medications, supplements, and lifestyle habits.
  • Smoking and/or vaping status
  • Past surgeries.

Your plastic surgeon will also:

  • Evaluate your overall health and assess any preexisting conditions or risk factors.
  • Capture photographs for documentation purposes.
  • Deliberate on liposuction options and recommend a suitable treatment plan.
  • Address potential outcomes, risks, and complications associated with the procedure.

Feel free to ask your plastic surgeon any questions you may have during the consultation. It’s normal to experience some level of anxiety, whether it’s anticipation or preoperative stress. Don’t hesitate to openly discuss your feelings with your plastic surgeon.
