What is breast implant revision surgery?

Breast implant revision surgery aims to replace old breast implants with new ones while also addressing any concerns or desires regarding the appearance of the breasts. This procedure may involve various techniques such as concurrent breast lift or reduction, reshaping the breast implant pocket, or changing the size, shape, or style of the implants.

There can be several reasons to consider revising your breast implants:

  1. Patients may wish to alter the size of their breasts, either by increasing or decreasing implant size.
  2. Capsular contracture, which is hardening of the capsule (scar tissue) around the implant, can cause pain, discomfort and/or a change in breast appearance.
  3. Patients may be concerned about the integrity or condition of their implants, such as rupture.
  4. Patients may be concerned that the implant has moved position.
  5. Some patients may want to switch from saline to silicone implants, or choose a different style of implant, in response to concerns about older style devices.

Who is a suitable candidate for breast implant revision surgery?

Patients who have previously undergone breast augmentation and are now dissatisfied with their implants or have concerns about their condition may be good candidates for breast implant revision.

Ideal candidates typically:

  • Are unhappy with the size, shape, or appearance of their breast implants, or
  • Have concerns about the integrity or condition of their implants.

Patients should:

  • Be physically healthy and at a stable weight,
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the surgery and
  • Be nonsmokers.

What should I expect during my consultation?

During the consultation for breast implant revision surgery, patients should expect to:

  • Discuss their surgical goals, medical history, and current medications.
  • Undergo a physical examination of their breasts and existing implants.
  • Discuss treatment options and receive recommendations.
  • Discuss potential risks and complications associated with the procedure.
  • Ask questions and address any concerns during the consultation to ensure clear communication with the plastic surgeon.
  • Understand all aspects of the procedure, including the recovery process and potential risks.
  • Have an understanding of the realistic results that can be delivered.

It is natural to feel some anxiety before surgery, but don’t hesitate to discuss any feelings or concerns with your plastic surgeon.

By having a thorough consultation and discussing your goals and concerns with your surgeon, you can make an informed decision about breast implant revision surgery and achieve the desired results.
