Training in plastic and reconstructive surgery in New Zealand and Australia is undertaken through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Once the specialty training programme is completed the surgeon is awarded a Fellowship of the College in plastic and reconstructive surgery (FRACS).
Surgeons with an international postgraduate medical qualification who wish to work as medical professionals in New Zealand need to apply for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). The MCNZ recognises plastic and reconstructive surgery as a vocational scope of practice. An applicant for registration will have their combination of qualifications, training and experience assessed against the standard of FRACS in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
